Overview
The Fnord NAS 310 and 510 series are highly flexible network storage servers. Capable of running either Linux (2.6.x kernels), FreeBSD 5.3 or Windows Server 2000/2003, they can absorb vast amounts of data over dual gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Any storage daemon that run on these popular operating systems can be used, including samba, rsync, nfs, various 3rd party NAS software packages, or the Windows distributed file system.

Serial ATA II RAID array
The RAID array is composed sixteen Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA2 hard drives, driven by a 3Ware 9550SX-16ML Serial ATA II RAID controller that provides a variety of choices in RAID configuration. Choose from RAID-5, RAID-1, RAID-0, or RAID-10 (also known as 0+1). The controller is accelerated by the use of 256MB of DDR400 ECC cache memory. Arrays can be formatted with any filesystem supported in recent releases of Linux or FreeBSD, such as UFS, UFS2, XFS, ReiserFS, or ext3fs.

CPU, Motherboard and Expansion
While some NAS units have CPU or memory limitations, the motherboard in the our 3U server can accomodate a 3.60GHz dual core Pentium 4 CPU and up to 8 GB of RAM. There are many possible uses for large amounts of CPU power in a NAS server, including multi-session transport layer cryptography and video encoding. With two industry standard 133 MHz PCI-X slots available for expansion, upgrade possibilities include multiple 1Gbps Ethernet interfaces, 10Gb Ethernet, Ultra320 SCSI RAID attached to external arrays and much more

Custom Configurations
Using our 3U or 5U chassis as a base, custom servers can be configured with a wide range of possible specifications. If you don't need the multi-terabyte capacity of a full server, you can start with only 4 or 8 hard drives and easily add more in the future.
