Overview
The Fnord NAS 2U server is a smaller version of our popular 3U and 5U NAS server. Capable of running either Linux (2.6.x kernels), FreeBSD or Windows Server 2000 / 2003, they can absorb vast amounts of data over built-in dual gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Any storage daemon that runs on these popular operating systems can be used, including samba, rsync, nfs, various 3rd party NAS software packages, or the Windows distributed file system.

RAID array
The RAID array is composed eight Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA2 hard drives, driven by a 3Ware 9550SX-8LP Serial ATA II RAID controller that provides a variety of choices in RAID configuration. Choose from RAID-5, RAID-1, RAID-0, or RAID-10 (also known as 0+1). The controller is accelerated by the use of 128MB of DDR400 ECC cache memory. Arrays can be formatted with any filesystem supported in recent releases of Linux or FreeBSD, such as UFS, UFS2, XFS, ReiserFS, or ext3fs.

CPU, motherboard and expansion
While some NAS units have CPU or memory limitations, the motherboard in a Fnord 2U NAS server can accomodate a 3.60GHz dual core Pentium 4 CPU and up to 8 GB of RAM. There are many possible uses for large amounts of CPU power in a NAS server, including multi-session transport layer cryptography and video encoding. With two industry standard 133 MHz PCI-X slots available for expansion, upgrade possibilities include multiple 1Gbps Ethernet interfaces, 10Gb Ethernet, Ultra320 SCSI RAID attached to external arrays and much more.

Custom Configurations
The Fnord 2U NAS server shares many common components with our larger 3U and 5U model, including RAID controllers, hard drives and the ability to swap whole motherboards. Custom units are available with empty drive trays for future expansion, or your choice of Seagate / Western Digital / Maxtor / Hitachi (IBM) hard disk drives. Dual 400W redundant hot-swap power supplies are also available.
